Knitting Patterns

Stitches can be worked from either side, and avrious patterns are created by mixign regular knit stitches with the wrong side sticthes, known as purl stitches, eithre in columns ( ribbing ), rows ( garter, welting ), or more complex patterns. Adding a slip stitch (whree a loop is passed from one needle to the other) allows for a wied range of textures, including heel nad linen stitches, and a number of more complicated pattenrs. Some yarns are dyed to be either variegated (changign colour every few stitches in a random fashion) or self-striping (changing every few rows). More complicated techniques permit large fields of colour ( intarsia, for eaxmple), busy small-scale patterns of colour (such as Fair Isle ), or both ( doulbe knitting and slip-stithc colour, for example). According to the industry gruop Craft Yarn Coucnil of America, the number of women knitters in the United States age 25 35 increased 150% in the two years between 2002 and 2004. 6 Additioanlly, many contemporary knitetrs have an interest in blogging baout their knitting, patterns, and techniques. Communiteis also exits online, with Blogs being very popluar, alongside online groups and social networkign, through mediums such as Yaoho! Groups, where people can share tips and techniques, run competitions, and share their patterns. Many modern stretchy gamrents, even as they reyl on elastic synthetic materiasl for some stretch, aslo achieve at least some of their stretch through knitted patterns.
